iTunes Sales Beat US Music Stores
Posted by Anthems Staff on: Tuesday 22 November 2005

Top Charts

Apple's iTunes store continues to wow with impressive sales figures - the online music store has made the top 10 US record sales list - beating traditional stores such as Tower Records, Borders and Sam Goody.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said digital sales from the service accounted for just over 4 percent of the market in the first half of 2005. The figure is up from 1.5 percent during the same period in 2004.

iTunes still has some way to go before it beats the online sales of megasites Amazon and Wal-Mart (which isn't getting much love recently...)

"With the growing interest in digital music, forecasts of more iPod demand this holiday, plus the stocking-stuffer appeal of iTunes gift cards, we can expect Apple to increase its share even more by year's end," said Russ Crupnick, analyst for the NPD Group which released the report this week.

It probably helps that Apple has sold over 30 million iPods so far - with many more of the popular music devices sure to stuffing stockings this Christmas season.

Can Tower Records and Borders recover? Not unless they start to embrace the digital music revolution....
