BBC Radio 1 in the UK is to mark the passing of one of the world's finest DJs on Thursday October 13th by starting the annual global John Peel Day.

John Peel was famous in the UK for giving unsigned bands from all genres of music airtime on his show. No matter what kind of music – be it rap, dance, folk, rock - you name it, he would play it if he liked the sound of it.

The Beeb wants people to organise their own gigs in tribute to the master DJ on the 13th October, even if it's a few bands down the local pub bashing out some tracks.

So far over 300 gigs have been registered on the BBC website to commemorate John from the UK and many other countries such as USA, Spain, Germany and Canada.

A special tribute event is to be held at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Wednesday the 12th October with Sheila Ravenscroft, John's wife, in attendance.

So far big name bands New York, The Fall, Jawbone, Venetian Snares and Super Furry Animals are booked to play.
